William Charles Stanley “Bill” Busby, IV

William Charles Stanley “Bill” Busby IV, of Yorktown, VA, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the age of 83.
Bill was born in September 1942, in Grand Island, Nebraska, to Charlotte Mae (Bowman) Busby and William Charles Stanley Busby III. His father inspected munitions factories, and the family moved frequently throughout Bill’s childhood, including several years in Chicago-area suburbs. He and his brother were taken in and raised by their aunt and uncle, Helen (Bowman) and Harry Eden, of Burlington, Iowa, who provided stability and a loving home.
Bill graduated from Burlington High School in 1960. He attended Burlington Community College, graduating with honors in 1962, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Psychology from Drake University in 1964, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
Bill began his professional career with John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works in 1964 as a recruiter traveling to colleges and universities. He later served in engineering, purchasing, and supervisory roles. He was part of the 12-member team responsible for designing and launching the John Deere Engine Works facility.
On May 1, 1965, Bill married the love of his life, Celeste Anne Eggleston, at First Congregational Church in Burlington, Iowa. They moved from Waterloo to Waverly, Iowa, where they purchased their first home overlooking the Cedar River and raised their three children: Matthew, Tyler, and Megan.
Bill proudly served in the United States Army Reserve, enlisting on January 7, 1967, and attaining the rank of Sergeant (E-5) as a Communications Center Specialist. He earned Sharpshooter qualification with the rifle.
Bill was a Certified Purchasing Manager, active in Toastmasters and the National Association of Purchasing Management, served as a church treasurer, and held various volunteer leadership roles.
After 28 years with John Deere, Bill took early retirement. He then held supply management and purchasing leadership roles with ABB Traction in Elmira, New York, Adtranz in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Standard Motor Products in Disputanta, Virginia, before retiring to Yorktown.
Bill was known for his strong will and fiery spirit, softened first by his aunt Helen, who raised him, and later by his wife, Celeste, whose steady presence brought balance and calm to his life. He was a fiercely protective provider, driven by a deep commitment to those he loved most.
He was also known for his intelligence and resourcefulness, with a talent for fixing almost anything. From working on cars to troubleshooting computer problems, Bill approached every project with persistence and care, seeing it through to completion.
He found joy in camping and canoeing with his family and pursued an interest in history, particularly the Civil War. Bill was a talented photographer; his best prints decorated the hallways of the family home and were the foundation for Celeste’s lifelong love of scrapbooking. In his later years, he enjoyed breakfast near Yorktown Beach on the York River, and in the afternoons, a cold drink with fellow regulars at the Yorktown Pub.
Bill is survived by his children, Matthew (Rhonda), Tyler, and Megan (Eric).
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Celeste; his aunt and uncle, Helen and Harry Eden; and his brother, Michael.
A private family service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indigent Hospice Fund, c/o Medi Home Health & Hospice, 530 Independence Parkway, Suite 200, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
