Wanda Jackson Layne


Wanda Jackson Layne passed away at home on May 13, 2024.
She was 95 years old. Wanda was the loving and devoted wife of the late Arthur E. Layne, Sr. and the mother of three sons, Arty and wife, Gayle, of Reva, VA; John and wife, Donna, of Afton, VA; and Jeff of Yorktown, VA. She was the grandmother of Arty’s daughter, Rebecca Layne, of Reva, VA; and of Jeff’s son, Timmy Layne, of Orlando, FL.  The daughter of John and Birdie Jackson, she was born in Norfolk, VA and graduated from Maury High School. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from James Madison College and her master’s degree in education from the College of William and Mary.
She was a teacher for over three decades in both Virginia and Panama, retiring from the York County School Division. She taught elementary school and middle school science. She loved the piano, art, writing, antiques, fishing, gardening, and traveling with her family.
She was a devout Christian and attended Providence United Methodist Church in York County since the 1960s. She loved and was loved by those who knew her. Her graveside funeral is to be held at Providence United Methodist Church (113 Old Dare Rd., Yorktown, VA 23692) on June 8th at 11:00 a.m. Those wishing to make a donation in her honor, in lieu of flowers, should make it to the Providence United Methodist Church Roofing Fund. As there is no viewing, family and friends may gather at the church to reminisce and share their memories of this wonderful parent and friend. There will be a reception following the ceremony at the church.
