Violet (Vee) Gloria Hayes

Yorktown, Va. – Violet (Vee) Gloria Hayes (Sabo), 92, of Yorktown, VA passed away after a brief illness on January 24, 2021 from complications of COVID-19.
She was born to John and Mary Sabo, in 1928 in West Aliquippa, PA. Vee graduated from Aliquippa High School in 1946 and attended Geneva College. Her parents and brothers John and Tom predeceased her.
She married Jack Hayes in 1948. She was predeceased by Jack and her daughter, Linda Tischler (Hank). Vee is survived by Kathy of Loveland, CO, Jack (Connie) of Yorktown, VA and Patrick (Kasey) of Pleasanton, CA. She had 7 grandchildren (Linda’s: Melissa and Ben, Kathy’s: Jessica, Jack’s: Emily {deceased}, Drew and Corinne and Pat’s: MykelPatrick). There are 5 great-grandchildren: Alexa and Linden (Melissa and Glenn), Oliver and Ronen (Ben and Alisha) and Sawyer (Jessica and Alex). She leaves, also, many cherished nieces and nephews.
Vee had three great loves in her life…Jack, who treated her like a princess, her children, who all did what they could to make her proud, and painting with her friends. She was quite accomplished at tole painting and we are privileged to have many lovely pieces by which to remember her. She was a great cook—we also have a cookbook of the best family recipes. She enjoyed the social aspect of her time spent at St. George’s Byzantine Catholic Church but also found it to be soul satisfying.
Her grandchildren especially remember her crafting abilities…painting on rocks, needlepoint, and making gingerbread houses complete with Lifesaver windows and Necco Wafer roof tiles! The Hayes Christmases were legendary, filled with noise, laughter, too many presents, and 12 kinds of cookies.
She and Dad loved road trips, where they could visit diners and off-the-radar attractions while traversing the USA visiting children and grandchildren. They also relished traveling by train, where Mom would snuggle up and read as the scenery passed (she was a VORACIOUS reader!) and Dad would prowl the cars, looking for someone to chat with. He loved people.
There will be no viewing but there will be a mass at St. George’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Aliquippa, later this Spring at a time to be announced. She and Dad will be interred together at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
