Tammy Henderson Martin

Tammy Henderson Martin, 54, passed away on Monday, November 28,2022, after a brief illness.
Tammy was born on May 3, 1968. She was a native and lifelong Peninsula resident and graduated from York High School in 1986. She worked as a Registered Nurse, serving as Assistant Director at a nursing home and as a nurse in the Emergency Room at Riverside Hospital in Newport News. Tammy’s passion was helping and caring for others’ loved ones, even serving as a hospice nurse bringing comfort to patients and their families in their final days.
Tammy will forever be remembered for her infectious smile, intelligence, sense of humor and the fact that “she never met a stranger”. Tammy could make friends with anyone she met. Her personality has been described as compassionate, magnetic, electric, and creative. It made it easy for her to meet people and chat, and she was not shy to a conversation. She loved philosophical debates and interesting conversations about everything, covering wide-ranging topics from medicine, science, music, anime, and video games.
She was a woman of deep faith, a nature lover, avid reader who enjoyed reading outdoors. You could catch her on a park bench, by a tree, barefoot in the sand, anywhere you could catch a breeze and enjoy the day. Tammy was a talented artist, producing creative arts of sculpted and painted horses, and landscapes. Tammy also greatly enjoyed horseback riding, especially with her Bay Arabian horse “Marraf”. She especially loved to ride bareback and barefoot, galloping with the wind blowing through her untamed hair and his mane.
Tammy loved and adored each and every family member of her large, extended family on both sides of the family tree, and always looked forward to spending time with the Henderson and Johnson families. Tammy’s love for her son James was unmatched. She enjoyed planning his birthday parties, holidays, and every opportunity to show him how deeply he was loved, and cherished, giving him wonderful memories through the years.
Tammy is survived by her son James Michael Martin, her parents James “Mac” Henderson, Karan Johnson Henderson, Jim Coen, her sister Jen Henderson Gundling and husband Mike, and numerous beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
We hold Tammy Renee Henderson Martin’s memories close to our hearts and will forever keep her in our thoughts and prayers until we meet again, may your beautiful soul, rest in peace. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
