Charles “Sonny” Forbes, III


Charles Hobday Forbes III, also known as Sonny Forbes, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024, in Yorktown, Virginia, at the age of 89.
He was born on April 7, 1935, in Norfolk, Virginia. Sonny was a devoted husband to the late Sandra Forbes, a loving father to John “Be” Burton Forbes (Terry Ott), and a loving brother to Suzanne Forbes Lawton. He was preceded in death by Charles H. and Marion P. Forbes (parents), Leigh P. Forbes (brother), and Charles “Chip” Hobday Forbes IV (son).
Sonny was a man who embraced life with a passion for football, hunting, and soft-shell crabs. His vibrant spirit and exuberant laughter touched the lives of many. He always reminded us: He lived! He loved! He laughed! He will be deeply missed by his surviving family members, Scott Thacker (Ellen), David Haskin (Teresa Thacker) Brian Thacker (Laurie), Ian Thacker and all the rest of the grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Sonny grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He attended Norfolk Academy and Maury High School before furthering his education at the University of North Carolina and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Maury High School alumni luncheons were something he always looked forward to and enjoyed attending. He found solace and community at St. Mark Lutheran Church Yorktown, where he worshipped alongside loved ones.
A funeral service to honor Sonny’s life will be held at St Marks Lutheran Yorktown on Monday, May 20 1230PM. In his memory, may we remember the joy and laughter he brought to those around him and the legacy of love he leaves behind. Arrangements are by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, Va.
