Sandra Kaye McElroy Hicks
Sandra Kaye McElroy Hicks of Gywnn’s Island, VA, sadly passed away on Wednesday, 20 December 2023.
Sandie had been in poor health in recent years, and had just celebrated her 79th birthday. She was born on 18 December 1944 to Georgia Marie Coward (Sassen) and Woodrow James McElroy in Newport News. She lived in Dandy for over 45 years where she and her late husband George Kemper Hicks Sr raised their family. She graduated from Warwick High School in 1963. She retired from Dominion Energy after 20 years, previously working as a dental assistant, and a special education teacher’s aide at Poquoson Elementary School. In February 1962, Sandra met the love of her life. She said the first night they met, she and her girlfriend were at a drive-in diner and she made George sit in the back seat. That night he gave her his class ring, and they were married in December. Sandie was an avid reader, a self-proclaimed shopaholic with the motto “shop til you drop.” She loved all things Victorian and collected many old quilts. She was a former member of the Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads and a member of the Hampton Roads Seventh-day Adventist Church. Most importantly, Sandie was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother (Nana). Sandra is predeceased by her devoted husband of 56 years, her parents, and sister, Jeanne M. Tison. She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Kaye Hicks (Bill), and her son, George Kemper Hicks Jr (Deanna), both of Gloucester VA, and her grandson Dylan Kemper Hicks (Ashley) and great grandson George Kemper Hicks III, both of Gwynn’s Island. The family would like to thank the staff at the dialysis center for their caring kindness. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in honor of Sandra to a charity of your choice, or to CHKD, Norfolk, VA.
