Ruth Shields Whitmore

Ruth Shields Whitmore, 98 of Yorktown, Virginia passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026 surrounded by her family.
Born August 15, 1927 in Leaksville, NC to Anna Watlington Shields and Bedney Shields.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 77 years John Winston Whitmore, Sr., her parents, 10 brothers and sisters and grandson, Shaun Lee Whitmore.
She is survived by her children: John Whitmore, Jr. (Nina) of Gloucester VA, Kenneth Whitmore (Gina) of Lancaster PA, Elizabeth Hill (John) of The Villages FL and Nancy Mitchell (Ron) of Yorktown VA; Granddaughters: Shannon Wolpert (Michael) of Lancaster PA, Jaime Austin (Sean) of Gloucester VA, Megan Whitmore of Virginia Beach VA and Karina Fisher (Christopher) of Lancaster PA; and Great grandchildren Abby Martin (Hunter), Michael Wolpert, Olivia Wolpert and Madilyn Fisher.
Ruth completed her RN training in 1948 as a part of the WWII Nurse Cadet Corps and retired from Riverside Hospital in 1987. John & Ruth loved to travel – enjoying two cross country road trips and many winters in Florida after retirement.
Ruth was devoted to her family and had been an active member of Crooks Memorial United Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at 12 noon in the chapel at Amory Funeral Home in Grafton, VA. The family will receive friends and family prior to the service beginning at 11:00 am. Graveside will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA at 1:00 pm.
