Russell Lake McMillen, Sr.


Yorktown, Va. – Russell Lake McMillen, 98, of Grafton, Virginia, went home to his savior on Saturday April 18, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born on July 2, 1927, in Meadow Bridge, West Virginia, Russell was the son of the late Sidney and Florence Gwinn McMillen. He was a dedicated member of the Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, where he cooked breakfast for the men and tended to the church garden for many years. Russell’s love for the church and its members was truly heartfelt. Russell was married to the love of his life for 53 years.
Russell retired as a master sergeant from the United States Air Force after 22 years of service. After boot camp he became a dental technician. He rose through the ranks rapidly and became NCOI of the dental clinic wherever he was stationed. His tour of duties included Illinois, Japan, Texas, Mississippi, Vietnam and Virginia. After retiring, in July of 1969 Russell built a house in York County where he made a home with his family. He a yearn to have a garden all the years he was in the service. When he built his house, he turned half the backyard into a garden. And from that point on he was known in the neighborhood as the ” Tomato King ” in sunglasses. He enjoyed yard work, gardening spending time with family and friends. He was a gentleman, loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all he met. His smile was infectious his loyalty & friendship will rock solid.
Russell was preceded in death by his son Russell Lake McMillen, Jr. and two brothers, Ray McMillen and Joe McMillen, two sisters Juanita Campbell and Glenna Crane.
Those left to cherish his memories include his son Gregory McMillen and his wife Diana, three grandchildren, Tyler, Alea and Travis, one great-child, Halle. Three siblings, Norma Goins and husband Lonnie, Elbert “Mac” and wife Mary Ann, Aaron “Tuck” and wife Janice numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be Amory funeral home Sunday April 26th, 4 – 6. The funeral will be private. Donations of sympathy can be sent to Amory funeral home, 410 Grafton Dr. Grafton, Virginia 23692. Donations in dad’s name can be given to your local food banks. A memorial service will be held at Yorkminister Presbyterian Church in Grafton Virginia on Friday May 15th at 4:00 PM.
