Richard Sheldon Griffin

Richard Sheldon Griffin, 89, passed away peacefully in his home on August 9, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Alma Laura Griffin, his father Samuel Derward Griffin, his mother, Virginia Lorane and step-father, William Arthur Christenbury. Two other great losses were his half-brother, William A. Christenbury, Jr. and his stepson, Rev. Daniel Sean Reagan, Sr.

Richard retired from the U.S. Coast Guard with 22 years of active duty service. He served on various ships and was stationed stateside and overseas. His duties included control tower operations, combat information center, deck seamen, and officer candidate instructor. After retirement, he served as an instructor with the U.S. Army Watercraft Operator School, Ft. Eustis, VA.

He cherished his family and his stepchildren as they grew into maturity. He enjoyed gardening, reading military history, and fishing. He also loved attending baseball games, performances, concerts, and other activities where his grandchildren were involved.

Survivors include his stepchildren Jef Reagan (Paula), Keith Reagan (Lisa), Jennifer Utne (Bruce), 10 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

A private graveside service and internment will be held at the family cemetery. In lieu of flowers, he requests donations be made to the Coast Guard Foundation.
