Ray Wood
Hayes, Va. – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ray Wood on Wednesday March 23, 2022. Ray was born in 1943 to the late James and Lillie Wood. Ray grew up in Grafton and attended York High School graduating in 1961. Ray was an outstanding baseball player at York High School and for American Legion Post 165. Ray started his career as a volunteer firefighter, before becoming a fulltime paid firefighter for York County. After Ray and Faye married in 1966 they moved to Gloucester, where he worked for the Yorktown Naval Weapon Station Fire Department. Ray retired in 1994. After retirement he enjoyed his family, yard work, gardening, golfing and making everyone laugh.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Faye Wood, his only son Shawn Wood (Nickole), grandchildren, Tyler and Lucas Wood. He is also survived by his brother, Stanley Wood (Betty) a sister-in-law Theresa Wood, nephew Larry Williams(Tiffany) and a niece Katelyn Wood. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Lillie Wood and a brother Danny Wood.
