Paul Lee Hopkins, Sr.


Paul Lee Hopkins, Sr., 90, born in 1934 in Poquoson, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024, in Newport News, Virginia.
Paul was a kind, generous, and patient man who touched the lives of all who knew him. He was predeceased by his parents, George Roland and Matilda Rollins Hopkins; his brothers Samuel, Edward, and Otis; and his sister Eleanor.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Nancy Taylor Hopkins; his children Paul Hopkins, Jr. (Paula), Susan Henk (Edward), and Alan Hopkins (Melissa); and his cherished grandchildren Christy Phippins, Lindsey Snowden, Mary Stone, and Josh Stone. Paul leaves behind great-grandchildren Zoë, Skylee, Josie, Trevor, Sydney, Conner, and Brody. He was called Granddad by many others. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Sally Keithley, brother-in-law Edward Taylor and many nieces and nephews.
Paul graduated from Poquoson High School in 1952 where he was a member of the undefeated football team. Paul retired from BASF after 25 years of dedicated service. He was a charter member of Menchville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for several years. Paul was also a member of the Warwick Lions Club where he and Nancy participated in the annual variety show for many years.
Paul was an avid golfer and always enjoyed playing a round with his golfing buddies. For several years, Saturdays at Langley Speedway were a family event as Paul served as pit crew and chief supporter for the family’s involvement in stock car racing. Paul was always present for any sport or activity that involved his children or grandchildren. His life was marked by a steadfast commitment to God, family, and community.
A visitation will be held at Menchville Baptist Church on January 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m.
Paul’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. May his legacy of faith, kindness and generosity continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
