Marie Hazel White Smith
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Hazel White Smith on October 17, 2024.
Marie was born on January 27, 1935, in a log cabin in Middle Inlet, WI weighing only 3.5 pounds, the smaller of twin sisters. She was one of 7 children and spent most of her childhood in Joliet, IL.
After finishing high school, Marie performed secretarial work at the Ordnance Ammunition Command where she met her husband, 2nd Lt. Earl M. Smith, and were happily married for nearly 70 years. Earl and Marie had 4 children, 3 sons (Earl Jr., Stephen, and David) and 1 daughter (Elaine).
Marie loved to help others and contribute her time to the community. She volunteered with the Scouts, her church, and several organizations supporting the learning disabled. While working for Allegany Community College in Dental Hygiene / Dental Assisting department, in Maryland, she helped students obtain aid and housing. Marie then opened her own small business providing flower arrangements for weddings, homes, businesses, and churches. Christmas was her favorite time of the year. When Earl retired, she closed her business, and they relocated to Yorktown, VA. She continued to volunteer her time with the Lackey Dental Clinic, and she was always quick to donate flowers and decorations to her church and friends. During her last few years, her eyes and hands began to fail her, and she could not continue to arrange flowers.
Throughout her life, her faith and love for our Lord Jesus Christ was absolute and provided her strength in the hardest of times. She always looked forward to Sunday service. She now receives her services and communion with our Lord in Heaven.
Marie is survived by her husband, Earl M. Smith, her sons, Earl Jr., Stephen, David, her daughter, Elaine, her 7 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
