Margaret Massey Wood


Margaret Wood, 88, died October 12, 2023.
She was born in Sacramento California, grew up in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and was a longtime resident of Yorktown Virginia.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Fred L. Wood. They were married in 1954 at the St John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Margaret is a graduate of Dana Hall School, Katharine Gibbs School, and received a Bachelor of Arts from Christopher Newport University and a Master of Science from Bridgewater State College.
She served as a Red Cross Volunteer for 40 years as a water safety instructor, teaching children how to swim, and as a CPR instructor.
She was the Sports Specialist and Aquatics Director at Fort Eustis for 6 years, where she received numerous certificates of appreciation and achievement for outstanding service to the Fort Eustis community.
Margaret was well known for her love of fitness and earned many qualifications such as: Black Belt in Judo, American Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor Certificate, Certified EMT, and Certification of ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor.
She especially enjoyed swimming, biking, and running and in fact won the Rock and Roll Half marathon in Va Beach for her age group at 70 years old.
Margaret is survived by her four children, Deborah Nakamura, Fred Wood, Pamela Dunkley (Michael) and Harold Wood (Diane), eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Join friends and family at her home on November 11th. At a later date, a graveside service will be held at Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
