Margaret Jean (Jeanie) Downs

Yorktown, Va. – Margaret Jean (Jeanie) Downs departed this life to be with her Lord and Master at home in Yorktown Virginia with her family at her side.
She passed from this life on January 21, 2024. She was 72 years of age. She was born in Homer Louisiana on December 25, 1951 to George and Maurice Caraway. Jeanie, as she was known to her friends and family, was a retired Registered Nurse. She had followed her husband of 52 years around the United States as the wife of an Air Force officer and pilot. Her last workplace was at Riverside Regional Medical Center in the Neonatal ICU in Newport News VA.
Throughout her life she was known and loved by all with whom she worked and associated. She and her family moved to Yorktown in 1988 and was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and had served her Lord as a Children’s Sunday School Teacher. After her retirement, she continued to teach Mother-Baby and CPR classes for Riverside until Parkinson’s Disease forced her to cease her teaching in 2014.
She was a devoted wife to her husband, Bob, mother to three children; Bryan and wife; Deborah Canty-Downs of Newport News, Cynthia and husband Christopher Lyon of Williamsburg, and Dr Kristina Downs of Stephenville Texas, and grandmother to five grandchildren; Jason, Aisha, Kaiya, Alex, and Zachary. She was affectionally known to her grandchildren as Nana.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Downs, her sister, Katharine (Kitty) Caraway of Yorktown, her three children and five grandchildren mentioned above, her sister-in-law, Karen Rogers of Macon Georgia, three nieces and one grandniece.
Her Celebration of Life Service will be held at Providence United Methodist Church in Yorktown on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 11:00am with burial of ashes in the Church Cemetery. Amory Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Providence United Methodist Church or to the Parkinson’s Research Foundation in her honor.
