John Manning Herbener
John Manning Herbener passed away peacefully at his home in La Plata, MD on 3/21/24 at the age of 83.
He was born in Portsmouth, VA to John Herbener, Jr and Nonie Manning Herbener. His young life was filled with multiple moves to places near and far, from Deep Creek to California to Beaufort NC, finally settling in Seaford, VA.
He graduated from York High School in 1960, where he was senior class president. Despite his short stature he played point guard on the varsity basketball team.
John married Paige Ormand in 1963 in Seaford, VA. John and Paige lived in Poquoson, VA for 20+ years, where they raised their 3 children and enjoyed helping out with all their activities. Many a weekend was spent camping with family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, leather working, and cooking. He was especially adept at all things seafood: Maryland style crab cakes, scallops and flounder were his specialties.
After graduation John worked with The Virginia Highway Department for a short time. He then went to work as a civil servant at the Yorktown Naval Weapons station in the Weapons Quality Engineering Center where he was an equipment specialist. He retired in 1994.
In retirement, John and Paige moved to Gloucester for a few years before selling everything and transitioning to life on the road in their truck and camper. They discovered their favorite dog breed around this time – Greyhounds! They rescued their first greyhound from a dog racing track in Florida. They loved their gentle giants as their children.
Grandchildren and Paige’s leukemia settled them in Sunset Beach, NC. Here John worked part time at Bill’s Seafood. He was in his element there, filleting fish and helping the customers who all knew him as Mr John.
After Paige’s death, John moved to Crestview Florida to be near his daughter and her family. He then moved with them to La Plata, MD. In his later years John discovered the internet and Facebook. He loved posting pictures of his favorite animals, flowers, and beautiful scenery.
John was predeceased by an infant sister, Mary Sue, his parents, and his loving wife Paige.
He is survived by son Mark Herbener (Christine) of Danville, VA, daughters Debra Joyner (Dennis) of Longs, SC, and Donna Day (Patrick) of La Plata, MD. He has 7 wonderful grandchildren: Danielle and Ryan Herbener, Dennis and Mason Joyner, Kylene, Ashlyn and Connor Day.
John’s family and friends will miss him dearly until we are all reunited in Heaven. Godspeed Pop until we meet again!
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Friday March 29th at Amory Funeral Home located at 410 Grafton Dr, Yorktown VA.
