John Daniel “JD” Hammond

John Daniel Hammond (JD) was born March 21, 1938, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2025.
He spent the majority of his life as a youth in North Carolina. John (J.D.) was 1 of 9 children to the late William & Daisy Hammond. His family moved to Portsmouth, Virginia for work, where he graduated from Craddock High School. He was drafted and served in the Army during the Korean conflict. After service, he retired to the workforce in Portsmouth, Virginia. He worked in the construction industry there, and later met his wife of 58 years, Lula Roberts. They had a son, David (Kim), and a daughter Rhonda Gibbs. In 1978 tired of working out of town and wanting to help raise his family, he decided to start a masonry contracting business. He had a passion for life, and his hobbies included fishing, dancing, boating and he also always had time for just one more. Later these hobbies took a back seat to his grandchildren, Kevin and Kaylee (Rhonda) and Jonathan and Kolton Hammond (David & Kim). He always admired the natural beauty of our surrounding area. Through his many years, he worked beside some of the finest human beings, made lifelong friends, taught and helped many people along his way. He was always a humble man, lived modestly, always willing to help others, and never met a stranger. The family would like to thank the team at Harper Station and Medi Hospice for their help in making this final time as comforting and peaceful as humanly possible. No services will be held at this time.
