Jo Elaine Owens Hoard
Yorktown, Va. – Jo Elaine Hoard (Owens), 82, passed away on August 8, 2024. Born in Newport News, Virginia, she graduated from Warwick High School in 1959.
Jo was the heart of our home and family, taking immense pride in her roles as a wife to Bobby, a mother to her two daughters, and MeMaw to her grandchildren.
Jo and Bobby grew up together, riding the same school bus, attending the same church, and eventually eloping on December 23, 1965. Throughout his career, Jo was a devoted wife and a source of quiet strength and unwavering support for Bobby. Her gentle presence played an essential role in his professional life, allowing him to pursue his dreams with confidence and peace of mind. She managed family life with grace and created a warm and loving home.
Jo’s dedication to her girls, Deborah and Karen, was boundless. They were the center of her world, and she was their steadfast source of encouragement, comfort, and inspiration. She always went above and beyond for their happiness and well-being—whether helping them find the perfect formal dress, accompanying them on a business trip because “I don’t want you to go alone,” or indulging in shopping to ensure they had exactly what they needed (even if they didn’t need it). Her generosity, kindness, and love were unmatched. Jo was more than a mother; she was a friend, confidante, and role model. She took immense pride in her daughters’ achievements and cherished every moment with them.
A gracious host, Jo loved cooking and preparing meals for her family, especially during the holidays. Christmas was particularly special to her, as she delighted in decorating her home and showering her loved ones with thoughtful gifts and treats. Her personalized gifts, tailored to each family member’s personality, were a testament to how well she knew and loved us, and they brought hours of nonstop laughter.
Jo is survived by her husband, Robert C. Hoard; their daughters, Deborah and Karen; her favorite sons-in-law, Joe and Sean; and her grandchildren, Tyler, Olivia Jo (Parker Dubois), Alexander, Joseph (Bethany), and Annabel Marie.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Linda Elliott (her sister), Karen Calogrides (niece), and Norma Jean Banks (sister-in-law) for their compassionate care and support over the last 18 months. Your weekly visits were deeply appreciated, and we know Jo felt your presence every day.
We find solace in knowing that Jo is now at peace, watching over us with the same love and care she gave throughout her life. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. A visitation will be held on August 15, 2024 at Lebanon Christian Church at 10:00am, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00am to honor Jo’s life. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
