Janice Elkins Oliver

Janice Elkins Oliver, a York County resident for nearly all her life, passed away peacefully at her home in Yorktown on Thursday, January 25, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on the Naval Weapons Station on October 3, 1933, and recently gathered with family and friends to celebrate her 90th birthday.
Janice is preceded in death by her husband and Poquoson High School sweetheart, Arthur (Sonny) Oliver who passed away in 2011, and their infant daughter Renae. They had been married 56 years at the time of his passing.
Janice and Sonny were blessed to have three children: Vicki Weston (Jim), Jan Conley (Charles), and Art Oliver. In addition to their children, they had the joy of becoming loving grandparents to five grandchildren: Michael Conley (Andrea), Chris Conley (Krystle), April Weston, Brooke Weston Dillow (Chris) and Landen Oliver. Over the years they were delighted to welcome five great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Austin, Grayson, Abel and Avah. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Linda Oliver Ryan in Arizona and brother-in-law John McPherson of Yorktown.
Her parents, Presley and Vida Elkins, had a large family and Janice was the last of nine children. Though most of her brothers and sisters were older, she and her twin sister, Jean, kept each other company while growing up. Janice was very close to all of her sisters and enjoyed shopping together and making their traditional visit to Williamsburg at Christmas. With 8 brothers and sisters, Janice had many nieces and nephews to spoil over the years, and spoil them she did.
Janice knew and loved the Lord from an early age first at Bethel Baptist, Yorktown Baptist, and then as a faithful member at Seaford Baptist for the last 51 years. She had a servants heart and found joy in serving others in her church, her community and especially her loving family.
Janice loved Jesus and loved reading His Word daily. Recently when attending church became more and more difficult, she would sit for hours tuned in to her favorite TV preachers.
Her life was filled with love and laughter. Providing a good home for her family was her biggest joy. She often spoke of how glad she was to have been able to care for her older brothers and sisters as they aged. She enjoyed working in the yard, bowling, preparing meals to take to others, which included her favorite orange jello salad, and gathering with her lady friends to go out to lunch on Sundays.
In recent years she could be found sharing a Wendy’s Frosty with friends in the neighborhood or trying to beat us all at Phase 10!! Sunday afternoons she could be heard cheering for her favorite football team the “Redskins”. To know her was to love her and be loved in return.
A service celebrating Janice’s life will be held at Seaford Baptist Church on Monday, January 29, 2024 at 11:00 AM . Interment will be at Beech Grove Baptist Church in Coke, Gloucester County, Va. The family will receive family and friends at Amory Funeral Home on Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM
The family would like to express a special thanks to Riverside Hospice, Dr. Zachary Morie, Dr. Charles Vaughn, Dr. David Connito, and her loving caregivers, Angie Jenkins-Hollis, and Cindy Stevenson.
The family requests Memorial Donations be made to Seaford Baptist Church, P. O. Box 207, Seaford, Va. 23696 or to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, l 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, YN. 38105-9959 or (Children’s Cancer Cause, 1325 G. Street NW, Suite 540, Washington, DC 20005)
