James McNally “Mac” Henderson

James McNalley “Mac” Henderson, Jr., 76, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home in Yorktown, surrounded by his loving family, on September 23.

Born on October 19, 1949, in Newport News, James McNalley Henderson, Sr. and Mary Louise Arrington (Henderson) in Newport News, James was preceded in death by his dear brother, Rob Henderson; and his beloved daughter, Tammy Henderson Martin, whose memories he carried close to his heart.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Karan Johnson Henderson, with whom he shared 56 wonderful years of marriage; his sister, Jamie Batten, and her husband, Henry; his loving daughter, Jennifer Henderson Gundling, and her husband, Mike; and his grandchildren, James Martin; and Kalyn, Grace, Maggie, and Finn Gundling.

For decades, Mac served as a firefighter for the City of Newport News, stepping into key roles over the years as a bomb technician, arson investigator, and Fire Marshal. The fire department sent Mac through the police academy to become the first citywide arson investigator in the city for suspicious fires—granted full arrest powers, collecting evidence, and testifying in court as an arson expert. He also volunteered for the newly established dive team for the City of Newport News, later becoming an instructor who trained dive and rescue team members to respond to any water-related emergencies in the surrounding communities.
Recognizing his dedication and expertise, Mac was appointed by Virginia Governors Robb and Baliles to serve on the state fire board for a total of eight years.
No matter where he went, Mac seemed to run into someone who knew him. His favorite days were spent fishing—whether from the surf or a boat—and making memories with family and friends.
Beyond his legacy as a brave first responder, Mac will be remembered as a devoted family man and a pillar of strength to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his devotion, and friendship will live on in the hearts of everyone who was blessed to know him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (firehero.org), or a local fire department or first responder charity of your choice.
