

James “Flip” David Hoopes


James “Flip” David Hoopes, 89, of Hampton, Virginia, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud great-grandfather, James was a man who deeply cherished his family and the time he spent with them. He will also be lovingly remembered for his lifelong passion for music. He especially loved playing the guitar, often finding joy and peace in its strings. Music filled his life, and he had a deep appreciation for jazz and blues, which were among his favorite genres. Whether listening or playing, those sounds brought him comfort and reflected his warm, steady spirit.
James proudly gave 24 years of service to the United States Air Force Band, sharing his musical talent in service to his country and taking great pride in that chapter of his life.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Irene; and his brother Thomas.
He is survived by his two brothers, Earl and Robert; his five children, Donna, Brenda, James, Doug, and Heather; his 10 cherished grandchildren, Alayna, Leah, Seth, Brandon, Evan, Caitlin, Sean, Jordan, Chris, and Sierra; and his seven beloved great-grandchildren, Aubree, Luke, Eden, Aria, Benjamin, Ellie, and Kinsley.
A service with full military honors will be held on May 15th, 2026 at 11:00 am at the Albert G Horton, Jr. Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, VA followed by a Celebration of Life gathering in Gloucester, VA.
