Hester Saunders Ward

DANDY VA – In loving memory of Hester Saunders Ward 75 , of Dandy VA , who died from complications of Covid 19 earlier this month. She was born in Hampton VA. April 6th, 1945, daughter of Violet Freeman Saunders and John S Saunders. She was a long time Hampton resident residing in the back of the “Saunders Family Store” until later moving into the family home her father built on Topping lane. She graduated from Hampton High School with honors in 1963, after which she found her way into a civil service career at the Hampton V.A. hospital. She retired as the CHAMPUS Coordinator and assistant to the Commanding Medical Officer of the medical clinic at Fort Monroe.Hester married William Dale (Bill) Ward in November of 1967. They raised 3 children, Joshua, Brendyn and Blaire, for 17 years in First Colony of Williamsburg, VA, later moving the family to historic Dandy, VA in 1989 where their roots truly dug in on the banks of the York River and Chesapeake Bay. Hester would want to be remembered as a loving and loyal wife and friend and for her humorous view of life. She clearly left her mark on all of us fortunate enough to have lived in her world. Granny’s fudge cake, Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Breakfast, coffee on the porch, dog treats hidden in pockets, limitless play time with her Grand Baby Bristol, trips in the big van, and other such blessings will live in our hearts forever. To say she will be missed by many is an understatement.
