

Harry Byrd Robinson



Newport News, Va. – Mr. Harry Byrd Robinson, born October 18, 1933, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia.
He was 92 years old.
Harry proudly served in the United States Navy as a third class radarman for three years. Stationed out of Newport, Rhode Island, and Norfolk, Virginia, he was assigned to the USS Hyman and the USS Wren, where he specialized in radar operations during a pivotal era in naval history.
After his military service, Harry embarked on a 23-year career at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock. There, he played a vital role in the construction and maintenance of aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines.
In 1976, Harry founded Harry Byrd’s Fishing, Hunting & Marine retail in Yorktown. A trusted destination for outdoor enthusiasts throughout the region, the store reflected his deep passion for fishing and boating. He operated it with dedication until his retirement in 1998.
Harry also devoted himself to civic service. He served as President of the York Lions Club and held leadership roles within the state Lions Club organization.
An avid fisherman, boater, and crabber, Harry cherished time spent on Virginia’s rivers and bays. For nearly two decades, he wintered in the Florida Keys, continuing to enjoy the outdoors that brought him such joy.
He is survived by his devoted wife, June Robinson; his sister Virginia Conway; brother-in-law James Sorrells and his wife Cindy Sorrells; along with numerous beloved nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Battle Robinson and Louise Clinton Robinson; and siblings Anne Davis, Janice Colbert, Jean Bell, Edith Shelton, Arnold Robinson, and Keith Robinson.
The family is currently making plans for a memorial service and reception to be held at The Chesapeake Retirement Community. Interment will take place at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.
