Gene Allen Matthews

Newport News, Va. – Gene Allen Matthews, 76, passed away on Sunday May, 5, 2024.
Gene was a Native and lifelong resident of Newport News, VA. He graduated from Warwick High School and was a star on the football team having several articles in the newspaper. After High school he went to work for 7-11 as a manager. After 7-11 Gene opened Geno’s Kwik Pik in Poquoson and later opened the former Dare Market as Geno’s Kwik Pik in Dare. In his later years Gene went to work as a starter at Kingsmill Golf Course. Gene loved to play golf and softball on many weekends you could find him with his brothers Gary, Steve and Tim and his best friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest L. Matthews and Freeda V. Matthews and is survived by his brothers, Gary “Connie” Matthews, Tim “Dayle” Matthews and Steve “Dawn” Matthews and sisters, Yvonne Settle and Donna “Clayton” Castellow his step children Cathy “Boyd” Easter and Ricky “Millie” Duncan and their children and grandchildren and mother Brenda. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 4:00pm in Amory Funeral Home Chapel.
