Evangeline S. Ferguson

Evangeline S. Ferguson passed away on November 11, 2024, four days shy of her 92nd birthday. She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Sparrer, her mother, May Diggs Sparrer, and her husband, Ed Ferguson. She was a native of York County and lived there her entire life. Left to cherish her memories are her children, Linda Fox-Tankersley, Merilee Fox and Tim and Karen (daughter-in-law) Fox, her brother Wendell Sparrer (Ava) and granddaughter, Erin Tankersley.
Evangeline was a pioneer of her time being the first woman in the state to become the Director of Transportation for a public school division, York County. She had numerous other jobs, but loved this one the best and was honored as the “Mother” of Transportation in 2017 by their statewide organization. She spent a number of years learning to ballroom dance and competed all over the county, winning various trophies and recognitions.
Evangeline was known for her impartial and just treatment of all without favoritism or discrimination. Her smile would light up a room and she was always ready to provide comfort and support for those in need. Her greatest legacy was her life philosophy that she lived every day and tried to teach her children. Life is about giving and receiving love.
The family wishes to thank Spring Arbor Memory Care for making Evangeline comfortable in her last days. Family visitation will be Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 3:00-5:00pm at Amory Funeral Home, Yorktown, Va. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
