Elizabeth (Betty) Roberta Devan
Yorktown, Va. – Elizabeth Roberta (Betty) Devan, 89, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2022, in Newport News.
She is preceded in death by brothers Edward and Paul and sister June. She is survived by sisters Nina and Kathryn, brother Robert, and four children: James Devan, Patricia Riggins, Judith Lassiter, and Rebecca Shaw. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Service will be held on Monday, February 14 at 5pm, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Newport News, VA.
Born to 1st generation Slovak immigrants, Betty grew up in Flushing, NY, with interests in ballroom dancing, ice skating, and art. After graduating high school, she turned down a local art school scholarship to help care for her younger siblings.
After her marriage in 1953, Betty and her husband moved to the Peninsula to start a family. Later, as a single parent, Betty drove a school bus in York County until her retirement after 33 years’ service. Most of those years were spent driving special needs routes with her assistant and dear friend, Dot Bryant.
Betty was a founding member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Newport News. She lived her life trusting the promises of God and with a reliance on a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
