Edith Payne Schoffstall
Edith Payne Schoffstall, 93, passed away peacefully in her daughter Ellen’s home on Friday, May 26th in Yorktown, Virginia. She was born in 1929 in Hurlock, MD, the 6th of 8 children born to parents John “Emory” and Helen Payne.
Edith married George Nichols Schoffstall in 1947. They had 5 children: Sherry Ann Barker, Robert Joseph Schoffstall, John Bruce Schoffstall, Ellen Schoffstall McNeill, and Linda Schoffstall Reynolds. They later adopted their granddaughter, Cecilia Sprouse Reece. George, Edith’s husband, was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army and the family lived in Japan, Germany, and Korea, and were also stationed at several US bases.
Edith was very devoted to her entire family. She lovingly took care of her extended family before she had a family of her own. Edith worked as a secretary for the US Army in Japan, Germany, and Korea. She also worked as a GS-5 in the Procurement Division at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland.
Edith loved to play games and could be quite competitive. She loved to play the slots at the casino with her Seaford Delaware relatives, and also enjoyed playing Bridge, Bingo, 5 Crowns, Canasta, and Pinochle. On her own, she racked up some mean scores on free cell as well. Edith loved to spend her summers with family in Virginia and Delaware.
Edith is preceded in death by her husband, George and her daughter, Linda, as well as her siblings Virginia, Howard, Dorothy, Martha, Louise, and Philip.
Edith is survived by her children Sherry, Robert, John, and Ellen, as well as her sister Rachel, and many many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Edith will be buried with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery.
