Dr. Douglas Thom

Dr. Douglas Thom (Doug, Granddad, Grandpops, Dad) passed away on March 31, 2026 at 77.Born on February 6, 1949 in Hertfordshire, England, Doug grew up in Wales before attending King’s College London and training at St George’s University of London. He relocated to the U.S. for a residency in obstetrics & gynecology at Creighton University in Omaha, where he met the love of his life, Kathleen.

Dr. Thom put his heart and soul into the care of his patients and the upbringing of his family. His devotion to patient care helped bring over 6,000 healthy babies into the world – people who now dot our landscape, ages 3 to 48. He was dearly loved by his patients and earned a reputation for treating you as if you were family. He devoted the remainder of his time to raising his 4 children, teaching them the tenets of honesty, optimism, and hard work, while being a steady rock and partner to his wife Kathleen.

Doug was ferociously happy – he had wrinkles around his eyes from smiling so much. He loved trains, camping with Kathy, and proudly beating contestants on Wheel of Fortune from home. He had an imaginative, adventurous spirit, always finding creative ways to fix things, reading fantasy books, and breaking the rules on occasion – like putting wooden blocks in his youngest son’s shoes so he was tall enough to sneak onto rollercoasters.

He was known for his deadpan British humor and ridiculous sense of style – purposefully arriving at his daughter’s college move-in day in velcro shoes, high ankle socks, a safari hat, and a wheelbarrow. He was a constant reminder to be unabashedly yourself.

Most of all, Doug was fiercely proud of his wife and kids. He cheered them on at sports matches and running meets, celebrated their careers, and was an incredible granddad whom his grandkids adored.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, his 4 children (Andrew, Chris, Brandon, Colleen), their spouses (Jeanette, Mary, Alayna, Michelle), his 7 grandkids, and his sister, Sally. His family will miss him terribly and cannot wait to see him again. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Tunnel to Towers Foundation at T2T.org.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 from 6-8 PM in Amory Funeral Home
