Cynthia Somers Popernack

Cynthia Somers Popernack passed away after a brief illness on Monday, November 11, 2024 at the age of 61.She was preceded in death by her parents, C.H. and Vivian Somer, and her brother, Rex. Cynthia is survived by her husband, Tom; her daughters, Allison Popernack (married to Dan Whalen) and Meredith Popernack (engaged to Nathan Hearne); and sister, Deborah Finger.
Cynthia valued finding joy in the small moments and supporting the people in her life. She loved spending time in the Blue Ridge mountains, exploring national parks, and teaching her daughters to craft. Her home is a beautiful display of personal creations and local art. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Cynthia was an industrial engineer her entire career. She was a trailblazer for female engineers and a mentor to many. She also encouraged independence in young girls, serving as the leader of a local Girl Scouts troop for many years. She was a vibrant personality; her kind smile and infectious laugh will be greatly missed.
The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a church or charity of the donor’s choosing.
