Carl Lawrence Glass

Carl Lawrence Glass of Yorktown, VA, passed away on March 20, 2025, after a decade-long battle with cancer.
Carl was born—the sixth of ten children—on November 4, 1944, to Cecil and Anna Glass of Parker, Pennsylvania. He spent most of his life serving our country in the U.S. Air Force. His military career began during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, and it was a long and distinguished one. Early on, as an enlisted man, he trained dogs for security and drug interdiction, mainly in Europe. By obtaining a bachelor’s degree in his spare time, Carl advanced to commissioned officer in 1978.
Carl held some prestigious posts and duties after that. Among them are commanding the 3906th Special Security Squadron, which protected Strategic Air Command Headquarters at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska; attending the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia; and serving as a hostage negotiator. He was on the commission that restructured the Air Force after the Cold War. He also served alongside the Secret Service protecting Vice President George H.W. Bush. He retired from the military as a Major in 1993 and became the senior investigator for the Hampton-Newport News, VA Criminal Justice Department.
Until illness dominated his life, Carl was an avid traveler, having visited many places beyond his various military stations. His devoted wife, Sovannara Glass, fought tirelessly alongside him during his battle with cancer.
He left behind three children. Two daughters, Catherine Glass (Anne Koenig) of San Diego, CA, Rose Belue (Jake) of Richmond, VA, and a son, Sang Billy Glass (Melanie) of Chesapeake, VA. Carl also had seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nina Rice of Lorain, OH, Virginia Myers of Clarion, PA, and three brothers, Thomas Glass of Parker, PA, Robert Glass of Parker, PA, and John Glass of Merritt Island, FL. His surviving siblings are Bessie Rankin of Franklin, PA, and Stanley Glass of Grove City, PA. Karen Pittman (Lloyd) of New Cumberland, WV, and Howard Glass (Julie) of Grove City, PA.
