Billy Ray Mckeel
Yorktown, Va. Billy Ray McKeel, 86, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2022.
Ray was a native of Whitesville, North Carolina and a graduate of Williamston High School.
He served in the United States Army, from 1957 to 1960. After the Army, Ray moved to the peninsula, and went to work for Newport News Shipbuilding until his retirement in 1999 after almost 40 years of service. He was a former member and deacon of Westhampton Baptist Church in Hampton, and later became a deacon and member of Providence United Methodist Church in Grafton.
Ray was a man of deep faith and enjoyed playing cards with his friends. He loved to garden and had some the most beautiful azaleas and flowers. Most of all, Ray loved his family and was a devoted caregiver to his wife Linda and daughter Susan during their illnesses.
Ray is preceded in death by his wife Linda Bottoms McKeel, a daughter, Susan Lee McKeel; his parents Lemmie and Joseph McKeel, and a brother, Joseph Watson McKeel. Ray is survived by his daughter, Lisa Rae McKeel, his sister, Lillie Vonciel Sears and his brothers, Harold McKeel, Frank McKeel, James McKeel and a special companion, Betty Lowe.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5-7 PM at Amory Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 11:00 AM in Providence United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow in his honor. A graveside service with Military Honors will follow at 3:00 PM at Peninsula Memorial Park.
