God called this devoted wife, loving mother and His faithful servant Barbara Ella Layman Ham Slaughter home to glory on April 4, 2021.
Barbara was born (10/18/1927) in Batesville, VA and moved to Hampton, VA in 1948. She has been a resident of Hampton, York County and Newport News ever since. Barbara graduated from Greenwood High School in Albemarle County, VA. She was a faithful member and served in various capacities at Bethel Baptist Church, Yorktown, VA.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents John Thomas Layman and Bertha Smyth Marsh Layman, her husband William Thomas Slaughter, brother William Samuel Layman, sister Mary Elizabeth Layman, stepmother Edith Lee Nay, and half-brother John Templeton Layman. She is survived by sister Nancy Jo Layman Truslow (Youngstown, Ohio), half-brothers Randolph Lee Layman (Kathy) and Robert Henson Layman (Elizabeth) of Batesville, sons Thomas Melvin (Mary Jane), Robert Lee (Elaine), John David (Tamara) and daughter Elizabeth Ann Johnson (Al), four granddaughters Karen Thomas (Jeremiah), Jennifer Surber (Billy), Kristal Bland (Travis), Brooke Marie and one grandson Ryan William, and four great grandchildren, William Surber, Scarlett Thomas, Kylie and Kinsey Bland.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Bethel Baptist Church, Yorktown VA 23693 followed by burial at Maplewood Cemetery, Gordonsville, VA at 2:00 PM.
