Michael David “David” Williams, 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Williamsburg, Virginia, on May 18, 2026.

Born in 1938, in Jacksonville, Florida, David lived a life defined by intelligence, curiosity, innovation, and deep devotion to his family. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of Florida and later completed a Master of Aerospace Engineering with a focus in Aero-Physics from University of Virginia. His passion for science and discovery led him to a distinguished 42-year career as a Research Scientist with NASA at NASA Langley Research Center within the Laser Technology Branch.
Throughout his distinguished career, David contributed significantly to advancements in laser research and technology. He was especially proud to hold a patent for developing a method of remotely powering devices, such as lunar rovers, through the use of lasers. In addition to his pioneering laser research, he was recognized for his contributions to the design and fabrication of a full-scale Composite Crew Module and for his work as a member of the Reinforced Carbon-Carbon Damage Tolerance Team, where he helped advance the understanding and modeling of the damage tolerance capabilities of the Space Shuttle’s RCC leading edge materials.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, David embraced life with enthusiasm and warmth. He enjoyed line dancing, sailing, and most of all, spending time with his family and grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. He will be remembered for his brilliant mind, gentle spirit, quiet humor, and the love he shared with those closest to him.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Hoyle Williams; his children, Brian Eric Williams and Laura Beth Williams; and his granddaughter, Rachel Ann Williams. He is also survived by his stepson, CJ Hoadley and wife Nicole Hoadley, along with their children, Graham, Garrett, and Addison Hoadley who lovingly called him PopPop. He is further survived by his brother, Wayne Williams and wife Pat Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewie Cortez Williams and Eudene Hall Williams, and by his brother, Robert Williams.
David’s legacy lives on through his family, his contributions to science and exploration, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.
The family will receive friends from 4 – 5:30 PM on Friday, May 22, 2026 at the Amory Funeral Home in Grafton, Virginia.
