David Boyd Sykes, Sr.

David Boyd Sykes Sr (D.B.) September 12, 1939- February 1, 2026.David Boyd Sykes Sr (D.B.), 86, went to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February, 1 2026 surrounded by family. He was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was born on September, 12th 1939 in Spring Hope, NC, to the late Al Van and Sarah Carter Sykes.
He was preceded in death by loving wife of 63 years, Barbara, his daughter in-law Kim, his sisters Kezia Griffin, Jessie Johnson, Marjorie White, Elsie DiBenedetto, Ida Sykes, Mary Wood, Susie Ledford, and his brothers Alvin Lee Sykes, Quesnel Sykes, John Sykes and Charles Sykes.
He is survived by his children David Sykes Jr, Amanda Sykes, Al Sykes, and Brian Sykes, grandchildren Ethan Sykes (Alice), Nick Sykes (Bea), Heather Sykes Meier (Kyle), Elton Sykes (Jermarion) and great granddaughters Mia, Emmaline, and Lydia. He is also survived by his brother, Jimmie Sykes, and sister Shirley Jackson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
DB was born and raised on a farm in Nash County, North Carolina. On May 28, 1957 he married Barbara Johnson. In 1961, the couple moved to Viriginia where DB started his career at Newport News Shipbuilding as a Crane Operator, eventually becoming the head Crane Operator of the Atlas and earning the title of Master Shipbuilder. He retired in March of 2003. DB resided in Seaford, VA for the past 61 years. He was an active member of Yorktown Baptist Church as long as his health would allow.
A celebration of life service will be held at Yorktown Baptist Church at 1 pm, Saturday February 7th. A visitation will immediately follow the service. The service will also be live streamed on YouTube. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that people make donations to Yorktown Baptist Church.
