Vernon B. Bartels

Yorktown, Va. – Vernon B. Bartels passed away peacefully on Monday, November 17, 2025, surrounded by his devoted wife, Sharon, and his loving family after a long illness. He lived a magnificent, story-filled 82 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon, with whom he spent over 31 years; his children of whom he was so proud, Sheryl Koehler (Alex), Keith Bartels (Kyle), Wendi Sturgill (Eric), and Kristi Carr (Hunter); his twelve grandchildren and two step-granddaughters whom he adored beyond measure; his sister, Vivian; and a niece and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, favorite aunts, Frances and Mae, and his first wife, MaryAnne Bartels.
Vern was a proud disabled veteran who served his country with honor during the Vietnam War. He loved his country deeply, but nothing surpassed his love for Sharon and his family. Larger-than-life in both personality and spirit, Vern lived every day to the fullest and filled every room with laughter, stories, and boundless energy. He never met a stranger—only friends he hadn’t made yet.
After his military service, he started his own business, taught school, and later worked for the Department of Defense until retirement.
Hardworking, fun-loving, and forever the life of the party, Vern brought joy to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
In his later years, he came to a personal faith in the Lord and delighted in asking profound questions that could stump even the most educated theologians, usually around the dinner table. Vern leaves an enormous void in the hearts of all who loved him.
One more thing… We love you more than words can say and miss you already. Until we meet again in eternity, you will live forever in our hearts.
