Jean Smith


Jean Smith, 85, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia.She was a lifelong resident of the area. Born on November 4, 1939 in Newport News, Virginia and remained deeply connected to her community throughout her life.
Jean graduated from York High School in Yorktown, Virginia, where she laid the foundation for a life marked by service, dedication and a love for learning and the outdoors. Her passion for horseback riding became a defining part of her life. Not only did she enjoy the sport herself, but she also generously shared her knowledge and enthusiasm by teaching horseback riding to many local youths over the years. Her guidance left a lasting impression on those she mentored.
Jean was also a devoted volunteer with the Friends of the Library, where she contributed her time and energy to promoting literacy and supporting community programs. Her commitment to service extended to her involvement with the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, where she participated in efforts to support veterans and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Smith and her grandson, Timothy Smith. Jean is survived by her two sons, Robert Patrick Smith II and Richard Charles Smith, 3 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, who carry forward her legacy of strength and compassion.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive, Grafton, Virginia 23692.
