Anson Laverne Blevins

Anson Laverne Blevins, age 82, of Yorktown, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 in Yorktown, Virginia.
He was born December 14, 1942 in Warrior Mines, West Virginia, a son of the late Dana Alvin and Ida Garrett Blevins. A resident of Bristol from a young age, Anson graduated from Holston Valley High School in 1960. After graduation, he went to technical school for the electrical trades and moved to Yorktown, Virginia where he worked for over 50 years in the Newport News Shipyard. He retired in his 70’s and was featured in the shipyard’s magazine as one of the longest tenured employees. He made many life-long friends during his career, helping to produce warships and submarines. Anson took pride in and enjoyed his work. He was a faithful member of Parkview Baptist Church in Newport News for many years, where he and Martha cherished the time spent with their church friends, “the gang.”
Anson and his late wife, Martha Phipps Blevins, spent 33 wonderful years together before her passing on January 21, 2007. He and Martha were the epitome of a faithful Christian couple. While they never had any children of their own, they loved and were very close to all of their nieces and nephews on both sides of their families. They always enjoyed coming home to Bristol to visit family and friends and made a few trips every year. Anson and Martha loved to travel, and had the opportunity to travel all over the United States. During Martha’s battle with ALS, Anson cared for her and stayed by her side. Now, they are together once again in heaven. In addition to his parents, Anson was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 33 years, Martha Phipps Blevins; sisters and brothers in law, Eleanor Blevins Bunn and husband Don, Ann Blevins Helms and husband Roy; brothers and sisters in law, Keith Blevins and wife Jean and Malcolm Blevins and wife Patty; father and mother in law, Joseph and Susan Phipps; brothers-in-law, Harold Phipps, Clarence Phipps, and Warren Phipps; brother in law, Bill Carr; very special niece Cynthia Hicks, nephews, Kevin Blevins and Craig Blevins.
Left behind to cherish his memory are very special friend, Lynda Smith and her family; special niece, Sharada Beck and husband Darsey, special nephew, Darrell Hicks, several other nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; brother in law, Paul Phipps; sister in law Mary Lee Phipps; sister in law, Minnie Mae Phipps Carr; sister in law, Rona Phipps; other beloved family members and many friends in Yorktown and Bristol.
The funeral service will be held Monday, July 21, 2025 at the Glenwood Mausoleum with Rev. Chad Blevins officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association, 1300 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 600, Arlington, VA 22209.
A memorial service for all of Anson’s friends in the Yorktown and Newport News areas will be held later in the summer, with date and time to be announced.
