William Hansel Hayes

William Hansel Hayes, (“Bill”), 84, of Yorktown, Va., passed away peacefully on May 29, 2024, with his loving wife and devoted daughters by his side.
Bill was born in Florence County, South Carolina in 1940. He entered the Army and served as a Military Policeman throughout his service at Fort Eustis. After separating, he started his career as a Municipal Bailiff in Newport News. From there he served as a clerk of Juvenile Relations Court before starting his police officer career spanning over thirty years at the Newport News Police Department. Retirement wouldn’t last long as he joined the York County
Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff for another ten years primarily working in the courthouse.
Above all, Bill loved his family and making us all smile. He loved family reunions, phone calls with his brother and sister, and especially visits with the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He never waivered on his concern for us, always wanting to make sure we were taken care of. (How much gas you got in the car?) If you wanted a bite of a snack he offered, you better claim it quickly before he stated, “Last go round, too late now!” Camping and traveling across country were some of his other favorite things to do when he wasn’t wintering in Florida. His quiet faith strengthened over the years and his Christ-like demeanor was evident in his words and deeds.
To know him was to love him and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol, his children, Cheryl (Sherry) Jones (Glenn) and Stephanie Beninghove (Joey), his brother, Joseph Hayes and sister, Joann Matthews
(Levonne). He has six grandchildren, Nathan Jones (Nicky), Timothy Jones (Caren), Madeline, Matthew, Micah, and Maddox Beninghove along with four great-grandchildren, Natalie, Noah, Charlotte, and Finley Jones. He also has many cousins, nieces and nephews who will feel his loss greatly. He was preceded in death by his brothers Wallace and John David Hayes and a sister Ceceile
Visitation will be from 6-8pm on June 12, 2024 and funeral services at 11am on June 13, 2024 at Amory Funeral Home. Burial services will be held on June 13, 2024 at 2:00pm at the Albert G.
