William Cornelius Verniel


William Cornelius Verniel died peacefully at home on January 18, 2024. He was born in Hampton, VA, on October 19, 1943, and was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Virginia Verniel.
Surviving family members are wife, Pam, and daughters Francie Verniel (Donnie Yeatts), Jennifer LeCount (Brian); granddaughters Haley Weaver (Jordan) and Brooke LeCount; brother, Mike Verniel (Nancy).
Bill’s early years were shaped by his father’s Army service, leading the family to reside in various locations from 1947 to 1958 due to Capt. Verniel’s duty assignments, including Gettysburg, PA; Hartford, CT; Ft. Devens, MA; Ft. Dix, NJ; Baltimore, MD; and Ft. Monroe, VA. In 1958, they moved back to Hampton, VA, where they settled. Even though Bill’s early life was marked by frequent relocations, throughout it all, his constant companion was his twin brother, Mike. The connection shared by Bill and Mike went beyond the physical resemblance that came with being identical twins, extending into shared interests and passions. Their bond was forged through a shared love for sports, hunting, fishing, and the simple joy of spending quality time together. This connection proved to be unparalleled, enduring the challenges of frequent relocation throughout their younger years. Even when Mike relocated to Florida after retiring, the deep bond between the two remained unbroken, a testament to the enduring strength of their closeness.

On March 27, 1965, Bill married his love, Pamela West James, at First Methodist Church in Hampton. They lived in Newport News for 16 years. Then in 1981, an important milestone occurred with the purchase of property in York County. Bill, demonstrated remarkable self-reliance and began the construction of his dream home primarily during weekends and after regular working hours. Over a span of six months, he dedicated his time and effort to building a home for his family, successfully completing the construction in 1982. This achievement stands as a testament to Bill’s dedication and hands-on approach in creating a home for his family.

Bill’s life was enriched by a blend of outdoor pursuits, creative expression, and a strong commitment to family. Throughout Bill’s life he had a passion for hunting and fishing, a love that became an integral part of his identity. As a dedicated member of a hunt club, he not only embraced these outdoor pursuits, but also found a sense of community among like-minded individuals who shared his appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. Additionally, Bill’s creative spirit was a constant source of joy as he crafted a multitude of items, including walking canes, tables, frames, and other works of art. Each was crafted with care and intended as heartfelt gifts. A notable highlight of his craftsmanship was evident in 2022 when he skillfully created a beautiful table for his granddaughter’s wedding reception. Now residing in her home, this cherished table serves as a lasting symbol of love and celebration. Lastly, Bill’s unwavering dedication to his daughters and granddaughters was a hallmark of his love and commitment. His thoughtful gestures, marked by remembering them with gifts on birthdays and special holidays, spoke volumes about the depth of his affection. These acts of love became more than mere traditions; they were expressions of a caring and devoted father and grandfather. Bill’s legacy of love and thoughtful generosity will undoubtedly continue to resonate in the hearts of those he cherished.

Bill’s professional journey was marked by dedication and service. Professionally, Bill worked for VEPCO in the Gas Dept., York County, and VDOT. Bill served as manager at VDOT’s Goodwin Neck Facility and played a crucial role in overseeing and coordinating facility operations. Bill’s retirement in 1992 from VDOT marked the conclusion of a career that spanned different sectors and demonstrated a commitment to public service.

Bill and Pam shared a life filled with joy and fulfillment, embracing each moment together. Their journey included scenic travels to various destinations, encompassing memorable trips to Hawaii, both coasts of Canada, the Midwest, the Panama Canal, and Europe. Bill and Pam’s travels encapsulated the essence of a fulfilling life spent together, discovering the world and creating lasting memories together.

A memorial service in honor of Bill will take place on February 14, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 1024 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA. The family will be available to receive visitors starting at 1:00 p.m. Following the memorial service, a reception will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the church as a tribute to Bill’s memory.
