Richard G. Ingram

Yorktown VA – Richard G. Ingram, 94, went to be with his Lord on February 8, 2021. He was born in Palmer on the Northern Neck in July 1926. He later moved to the Peninsula.
He is survived by his 3 daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” G. Ingram, Martha E. Ingram and Diana “Dee” Burcher (Barry), Grandson Tyler C. Burcher, brothers Kenneth “Kenny” Ingram (Ruth) and Robert “Bobby” Ingram (Dee). He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and great-great nephews, and great-great nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Peyton and Esther Ingram, the love of his life, wife Helen Gillikin of 40 years, and son, Richard L. “Dicky” Ingram and siblings Sally, Esther Mabel, Luther, Logan, Irving, Elsie, Lois and Barbara.
The U.S. Army came calling in 1944. As a WWII Veteran, he was assigned to the 3rd Army 80th Division while serving in Germany. While serving in Germany he provided security for General George Patton and even had the occasion to work on his Jeep. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Medal for Expert M1 Rifleman, the Good Conduct Medal and Army Occupational Medal of Germany, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the WWII Victory Ribbon and the Nuremburg Tribunal Scales of Justice Medal. His unit also provided support for other units that were responsible for freeing the concentration camp, Buchenwald.
With his above average mechanical abilities, he started as a mechanic with Spratley Rogers Ford. Soon after, his reputation as one of the finest mechanics was soon established throughout the area with jobs at Thompson Ford, Kashouty VW, Nice Brothers, Bowditch Ford, Hall Ford and retired in 1986 from Northrop-Grumman at Ft. Eustis. Richard was a devout “Ford Man” and loved watching Bill Elliott race.
He became a member of Providence United Methodist Church in Dare. He was a member of the Men’s Fidelity Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Men, and a faithful member to his church and assisted anywhere he was needed. He was a devoted Christian who loved his family and his country.
Richard’s family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Commonwealth Senior Living where he resided for the last 7 years. Their compassion and concerns for his well-being were always above and beyond. We would also like to thank Virginia Health Services Hospice Care Northampton, for their devotion and care of him in his last days.
The funeral service, with military honors for Richard, will take place on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 2:00 PM in the chapel at Amory Funeral Home in Grafton. The Rev. Lisa Blackmonson from Providence UMC will preside. A burial will follow at Providence where he will be laid to rest next to Helen and his son.
