Mildred Evelyn Hedspeth

Mildred Evelyn Hedspeth, also known as “Mickey,” passed away peacefully in her home on November 12, 2025. At age 95, she resided in Gloucester County, Virginia. Mickey was born in Jackson County, Alabama, on April 26, 1930.
Mickey learned and continued throughout her life her genuine values of love, honesty, hard work, and taking care of family. When she was a young child, her older brothers were called to duty during the War, which made life difficult on the farm in rural Alabama. However, Mickey treasured her childhood memories and always said, “We were poor, but we didn’t go without and was happy.” Mickey left her home in Alabama in 1943 as a teenager and found a job at the Coats & Clark zipper plant to help support her mother and sister. She was a devoted daughter, and within a few years, saved enough of her wages to move her family to Newport News to be together again. Over the years, Mickey worked many jobs and retired as a secretary at L&H Concrete Co. She married the love of her life, Frank, in 1959, and together they built their home in Newport News. Mickey loved her home and friends but wanted to be able to enjoy the beauty of nature. She and Frank moved their family to Gloucester in the ‘70s to build their new home. Mickey enjoyed having family and friends over for weekend visits. She was an excellent host and made sure no one left her house hungry. She loved the outdoors, gardening, fishing, and hunting, and she never turned down a dance. Her strength, faith, love, and laughter will be greatly missed by many. Mickey was preceded in death by her husband Frank Hedspeth, parents Ollie Lutz and Andrew Lee, and brothers John D. Lee, James C. Lee, Andrew Lee, and Melvin H. Lee. Mickey was survived by her children, Mary Dickerson (Harold) and Frank Hedspeth, Jr. (Kay); her grandchildren, Melanie Ferrie, Beau Dickerson (Melissa), and Maria Hedspeth; and her great-grandchildren, Anthony Ferrie, Tyson Ferrie, Breelyn Dickerson, and Celeste Dickerson; and her sister, Lillie Lacks. A visitation for Mickey will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Amory Funeral Home in Yorktown followed by a graveside service at 3:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Cemetery. Special thanks to Mickey’s PCP, Rebecca Spinner, Dr. Sarah West, and the Riverside Walter Reed hospice team for the compassionate care they gave to Mickey.
