Daniel William Murray

Dan Murray (79) of Yorktown, VA has departed this world and entered eternal rest.
A lifelong resident of Hampton Roads, Dan grew up in Virginia Beach where he was a graduate of Princess Anne High School. Shortly thereafter he joined the US Navy where he was a member of the Essex class aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. Post Navy and continuing in his father’s footsteps, Dan established Ace Well Drilling, a successful endeavor which he owned and operated on the peninsula for 28 years until his retirement.
Dan’s sport of choice since high school was baseball so it came as no surprise when he decided to play in an adult slow-pitch softball league with the team ‘Corporation’ for a number of seasons. As Dan grew older, he swapped softball for the leisurely game of golf where he spent his weekends honing this skill with his dear friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents John and Viola Murray, grandson Spencer Wooddell, and niece Tina Bourdon.
Dan is survived by his wife of 58 years and high school sweetheart, Roxanne Murray; daughters, Cathryn Wooddell and Brady, Vicky Gillikin and Barry; granddaughters, Morgan Woodard and Seth, Kendall Wooddell, Reilli Gillikin, Stella Gillikin; grandson Brennan Gillikin; sister Gerry Bourdon and Marshall of Michigan; nieces, Leelana Yankee, Melissa Bourdon, Crystal Sorrell, and Amanda Roupe all of Michigan.
The family is grateful for the Williamsburg Hospice House and the compassionate care provided Dan and family by every staff member. We will celebrate Dan in a private family gathering and suggest in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Dan’s honor to the Hospice House of Williamsburg, for its continued support in our community. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, Va.
