William Johnson


William Johnson, 91, transitioned to eternal life March 24. He died at his home in Yorktown, Va. where he was cared for by his family and the staff of Riverside Hospice. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie Hudson Johnson, his parents George and Julia Johnson., a sister Lavetra McDaniel, and brother Bryant Johnson. He is survived by his son, the Rev. Mr. Daniel Johnson and wife Linda of Yorktown, VA and his daughter Deborah Kannewurf and husband Michael of Belleville, IL. He was a loving grandfather to Melissa Johnson Williams and Kevin and Keith Kannewurf. He had 6 great grandchildren children.
John was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas and later resided in Belleville, Illinois. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a medic/pharmacist’s mate. He was stationed aboard the hospital ship Solace and the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. He received 2 commendations and a purple heart. He loved sharing stories of his military experiences though often shedding tears when remembering the devastation of war and the loss of many friends in battle.
John loved boating and being out on the sea. He recently enjoyed cruising in the Caribbean and responded, “When can we go again?” He loved the outdoors and especially relished sunny days.
He cherished his role of “pawpaw” and his face lit up when his great grandchildren entered the room.
John had a deep faith and was a member of St Joan of Arc Parish, Yorktown.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Riverside Hospice, Dr Roland Bercasio, Dr George Kannarkat, and a host of friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 27th 11am at St Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Yorktown. Rev Michael Joly will preside and Rev John David Ramsey will concelebrate. The family will receive friends at the Church from 9:45am until 10:30.
Memorial donations may be made to Riverside Hospice, Newport News, Virginia.
