William ‘Bill’ Lee Austin

William ‘Bill’ Lee Austin, 84, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. Bill was a native of Asheville, North Carolina and a peninsula resident since 1952 and living in Yorktown since 1976. He was an Army veteran and retired as Master Shipbuilder from Newport News Ship Building in 1999 after 42 years of service.
He coached Youth football and basketball in York County for over 30 years. He attended high school football and basketball games up to the present time and loved his honorary senior pass to all the games. Kids in York County knew him as ‘Coach Austin’. He was a type of man that always put everybody else first.
He was preceded in death by a son Russell and his parents Thad and Willie Austin, and a sister Mary Jo and 4 brothers, Kenneth, Jack, John and Tom. Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years Maxine E. Austin; a daughter, Kathy Chilton and a son, Michael Austin and a sister, Judy Vaillancourt along with 4 grandchildren, Derek Weichler (Rosie), Austin Weichler, Shelby Rae Williams and Cydney Chilton and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in Amory Funeral Home. A graveside service with Military honors will be held at a later date in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
