Susan Hoover Zsoldos
Susan Zsoldos, beloved wife and mother, died on May 6th, from a brief battle with a fast-moving cancer. Susan was born in 1943 in Hampton, Virginia. Her father, Herbert H. Hoover, was chief test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton. Her mother, Ruth, was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, a teacher, and a homemaker. Susan had one brother, Hank Hoover, and a step-sister, Sharon Hinckley.
In 1948, the Hoovers moved to Newport News. In 1962, Susan graduated from Warwick High School and then worked for several years with the Newport News shipyard. In 1965, she married John Zsoldos, a native of Yorktown, and had two children, Jeff and Karen.
Susan’s son, Jeff, graduated with honors in aeronautical engineering at Virginia Tech and for many years has been a senior engineer/manager with the Mack Truck Company. He lives with his wife, Jenny, and two children, Haley and Sean, in Maryland.
Susan’s daughter, Karen, contracted meningitis as an infant and, as a result, became severely handicapped. Thereafter, Susan devoted a large part of her life caring for Karen. Susan never failed to set the highest standards for that care even though the challenges were often frustrating and emotionally very demanding. Her achievement reflected a strong will that was guided and tempered by a compassionate nature.
For several years, Susan worked as a Teacher’s Aide in the York County public school system. Her love and understanding of children made her a favorite among the teachers.
Susan had two grandchildren, Haley and Sean, and took great pleasure in seeing them achieve academic and athletic success and become young people who are fun to be with. They will greatly miss Gramma Sue Sue.
John, Susan’s husband of almost 53 years, will greatly miss her love, friendship, companionship, ability to keep household affairs in order, and excellent cooking. His life will be very different.
A graveside service will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park on Thursday May 17th at 11 am. A visitation with family and friends will take place at Amory Funeral Home the night before, Wednesday May 16th from 6-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the American Lung Association.
In addition to Susan’s death, her mother Ruth Hoover Smull passed away the month before on March 30th. Due to extenuating circumstances the family will hold Ruth’s funeral service directly after her daughters and the visitation will take place concurrent with Susan’s.
