Shirley Gray Kessler
Shirley Gray “Blinky” Kessler of Poquoson passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents: Tennis Garrett and Lena Ferguson Kesler; his brother Gordon W. Kesler; father- and mother-in-law John and Helen Wainwright; and brothers-in-law Meredith Appleton, John (Jay) Wainwright, and Thomas Wainwright.
Shirley is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet Wainwright Kessler; son David (Lisa); daughter Carol Knott (Bryan); grandchildren Kaelyn, Chaney and Trevor Knott; sister Faye Appleton; brother Bobby A. Kessler (Grace); sisters-in-law Evadeen Kesler, Toni Wainwright and Judy Wainwright; and many special nieces, nephews and friends.
Shirley was born in Wirtz, VA and moved to Hampton as a teenager. He enjoyed neighborhood football and baseball games during a time when you “went out to play until it was time for supper.” Following graduation from Hampton High School, he worked at Ft. Eustis in civil service. He was drafted into the Army, serving most of his time in Germany. After discharge from active duty, Shirley worked at the Army Reserve Center in Hampton. He retired from Civil Service and the Army Reserves as a Warrant Officer after 26 years of service. He enjoyed being part of the Weekend Warrior Group.
He enjoyed looking at and working on cars with his brothers and son. He was a Ford man and both he and his son had multiple Mustangs over the years while his brothers favored Chevys and Buicks. An avid fan of western stories and movies, he often knew them from repeat performances. He especially enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren, attending their cheering, band, scouting and athletic events. An avid UVA fan, he watched Virginia Tech too, when his granddaughter became a freshman there. He will be missed for his love of family and dry sense of humor.
The family would like to thank the care-givers from Riverside Hospice and Dominion Village for their professional and loving care of Shirley.
