Shelby Jean Isley (Dishman)
Shelby Jean Isley, 80, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was a native of Eden, NC. She married Joseph “Howard” Dishman and moved to Hampton, VA in 1953 to begin her family.
Shelby loved life and had a wonderful sense of humor. Many of her children’s friends affectionately called her Mama. Once you met her, she forever planted her footprint on your heart. She would gladly challenge you to a mean game of scrabble and penny poker.
She lived her life with zest and to the fullest. She was an inspiration to all with a physical disability. Therefore, she forever remained young at heart. Her favorite vacation spot was Las Vegas. She was fearless in taking on airports and flights in her Hoveround. Each and every visit demanded show tickets to Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. She truly was their biggest fan. The penny slots ran a close second.
She loved her children with all of her heart but her pride and joy was her grandchildren that bought her so much happiness.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Rita “Diane” Cooper (Ed), Sheila Dishman (Nick), son Dale Dishman (Tina) grandsons Evin and Blake Dishman, granddaughter Tara Dawn Potter (Matthew), great granddaughter Madelyn. Shelby’s daughter Suzanne Weaver preceded her in death 2 weeks prior. What joy it must have bought Suzanne to once again be reunited with her loving mother in heaven.
A special thank you to her dear friends Carolyn Ellington and Dana Stutts for all of their kindness, love, and support.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, September 29th, 2017 in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, VA. A Celebration of Life Service for Shelby will immediately follow at 2:00 pm officiated by Chaplin Abelardo T. Laurels. A graveside service will be at Parklawn Wood Cemetery. The family wishes to receive guests at 26 Sanford Drive, Newport News, VA 23601 to continue celebrating Shelby’s life.
