Paul Michael Hergenrother

Paul M. Hergenrother, 81, passed away on November 14, 2017. He married Lani J. Pasternak in San Diego in August 1965. They have two children, Michelle Jo and Sean Michael. He experienced a wonderful childhood growing up with 2 brothers (Jack and Jim Hergenrother) and 2 sisters (Sally Blakaitis and Connie Burke) and understanding and generous parents in a small western town in PA.
In 1953, he graduated from Wampum High School, Geneva College in 1957 after receiving a B.S. Degree in Chemistry, attended graduate school part time for 7 years at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University while working at Mellon Institute and Koppers Company until accepting a position with Whittaker Corporation in San Diego. He rose to manager of the chemistry department before leaving for a job at the Boeing Company in Seattle.
After 6 years at Boeing he joined NASA Langley where he held several responsible positions including manager of the composites, adhesives, and sealants task on the High Speed Civil Transport Program. During this time, he was an Active Adjunct Research Professor at Virginia Tech where he gave frequent lectures on high performance polymers.
He authored and published 145 refereed publications, 125 others, 83 patents, and edited 2 books. He served on the editorial board of seven polymer journals, organized several international meetings, made several reimbursable expense trips to Europe and Japan and received many R&D awards, including co-inventor of the year 3 times, and NASA commercial co-inventor of the year in 1998 and 2008. He also received several professional awards such as fellow of the Polymer Div. American Chemical Society and fellow of SAMPE.
He thoroughly enjoyed working at NASA with a group of qualified technical scientists, great equipment and the opportunity to do the work he enjoyed.
The family would like to thank intrepid hospice for all the care they showed Paul and the support they provided to the family. We would like to especially thank Mia, Eva and Helen.
We also want to thank Dr. John Bryant and Donna Moore from TPMG Yorktown Family Practice for the years of loving care towards Paul and our family.
Arrangements are under the care of Amory Funeral Home. Services will be private.
