Leroy B. Sanford


LeRoy B. Sanford of Yorktown, VA passed away at the age of 83, surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, September 17, 2018 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents Flossie Stuart Sanford and Bernard William Sanford of Kilmarnock, VA. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maggie Sanford; their children, Bonnie Lockwood and husband Bo, Craig Sanford and wife Ginny and Diane Walters and husband David; his grandchildren Amber DeRosier, Brian Cerny, Savannah Diedrich, Joshua Diedrich, Cody Lockwood, Evan Sanford and Luke Walters; his three great grandchildren, Felix and Kaleb DeRosier and Jaxson Fitchett, as well as his brother Vincent Sanford and wife Doris.
LeRoy was born in Senora (Lancaster County) Virginia. He graduated from King George High School in King George County and the Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1957. LeRoy served in the United States Marine Corps as a Lance Corporal and MP from 1957 to 1960 as a Helicopter Crew Chief in the Far East and in the Presidential Helicopter Squadron, Marine One, in Quantico, VA. He then returned to the shipyard where he worked in management for thirty three years, retiring in December 1993.
LeRoy will be remembered for many things, but mostly for the love he had for his family, his incredible sense of humor and his pride in the Marine Corps.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, September 21, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. Interment with military honors will be held following the service at 1:00 pm at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30am until service time in the funeral home.
