Kathleen Day Sparrer

Kathleen Day Sparrer, age 92, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2017 at the Gardens of Warwick Forest. Born in Hampton, Virginia and a native of Poquoson, she was the daughter of the late Nellie Moore Carmines and Decatur Z. Carmines. A 1942 graduate of Poquoson High School, Kay began a 32-year career in federal civil service as a medical laboratory technician at the McDonald Army Hospital. She retired from the finance and accounting office at Fort Eustis. Always a quiet lady, she was a special friend to those who came to know her. She enjoyed being outside with nature working in her yard, reading, and keeping up with the world news. She was very creative and always busy with her hands. She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Seaford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Walter Sparrer, and her siblings, Elsie Edwards, Harold Carmines, and Nell Cardwell. She is survived by her son, James Preston Sparrer (Erika); sister-in-law Rachel Carmines; brother-in-law, C.C. Cardwell; nieces Martha Kimbrell (Michael), Mary Ruth Callender, Janet Gottschall, and Sarah Edwards; nephews L.F. Edwards and Jim Carmines; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
The family thanks the staff at Warwick Forest’s Keswick Place, Rehab Center, and Chesapeake House for their truly loving care and concern. We also thank Maria Scallorn for her loyal help and friendship. In lieu of flowers, you may remember Kay by making a donation to Zion United Methodist Church in Seaford.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 21, 2017, in Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. David Magruder, officiating. A reception in the church social hall will follow the burial in the church cemetery.
