Josephine Johanna Schlank

Josephine Johanna Schlank of Newport News, Virginia, passed away on November 23, 2017. She was born March 19, 1925, to the late Joseph and Johanna Marmo of Islip, Long Island, the youngest of four daughters. Jo worked in the fashion world of New York City at Lord & Taylor Department Store and as an assistant to fashion design legend Eleanor Lambert before marrying John J. Schlank, Jr., and beginning a new life as a Navy officer’s wife. She followed her husband coast-to-coast four times, finally settling in the Washington, DC area where the couple raised their three children and where her hospitality became famous among their friends. A talented and natural artist, Jo enjoyed painting as well as cooking, playing Bridge and Pinochle, and working as a volunteer at the White House and with the Red Cross. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and travelling the world with her husband, to whom she was devoted for almost 60 years and with whom she played cards every day. Her family will miss her sharp sense of humor, her wise fashion advice, her Eggplant Parmigiana, and the way she helped her grandchildren cheat at Rummy. Jo is preceded in death by her husband, who died in 2013. She is survived by her three children, John J. Schlank III (Laurel), Judith S. Gardner (Kerry), and Anita M. Schlank; by three grandchildren, Bennison J. Gardner (Ashleigh), John J. Schlank IV (Monique), and Hannah L. Schlank; and by one great-granddaughter, Collins G. Gardner. Funeral services and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to a charity of your choice.
